How To Crochet Grannie Squares

Last month I finally sat down with my needle and yarn and decided to get on with that Afghan I had been dilly-dallying for months. You want to know the reason for my procrastination? I don’t know how to crochet grannie squares and that’s what you want to put on an afghan!

I looked high and low for someone to teach me how to crochet grannie squares and finally resorted to the Internet, sure that it couldn’t help me where aunt Dahlia couldn’t. But to my utter surprise I did find out how to do it . Now I am convinced there are a whole lot of people out there facing this same question, so I am going to be nice to all you ladies and tell you in 6 simple steps exactly how to crochet this beautiful, charming pattern, assuming you have decided on one.

1. Chain stitch the number of stitches given in the pattern

2. Make a slip stitch in the top chain, turning the chain into a ring

3. Chain three, which actually counts as the first of 3 double crochets. Follow it up with 2 doubles, then chain 2, make 3 double crochets in the ring

4. Wrap yarn over hook and draw through 3 loops on hook with 1 loop remaining on hook

5. Continue sequence of three double crochets with 2 chains between them as directed in your pattern

6. Switch yarn colors between rounds

My personal favorite choice of yarn is wool but I have also found that scrap yarn works wonders for grannie squares. If you are stuck for patterns, dedicate one afternoon to the web and the resources it can lay at your feet will make you out-of-control happy, I can guarantee that. And oh! you can thank me later for this know-how!
